Newspaper loophole – Market for Illegal Gun Sales

While firearms sales by licensed gun dealers are strictly regulated, gun sales between private individuals are completely unregulated. Unlike licensed gun dealers, private individuals are not required to do any paperwork or run any criminal background checks on their customers when they want to sell a gun.

It is of course illegal under Federal law to knowingly transfer a firearm to somebody who is disqualified from receiving or possessing a firearm, such as minors convicted felons who have not their rights restored, and domestic violence abusers. 40% of all gun sales in the US occur between private individuals.

There is a campaign to close “the newspaper loophole” – 71% of local newspapers accept ads for all guns. 10% of papers accept ads for long guns only – no handguns. The remaining 19% do not accept ads from any unlicensed gun sellers.
