Criminal background checks on individuals are not necessarily more important today than they ever were in the past. There is simply more awareness of the importance of investigating people's backgrounds and there are many more options available to the consumer today. Today, there are available many effective low-cost alternatives to traditional private investigators. If you're an employer, you might hire a background check firm or private investigator to run employee background checks, but for the small business or private individual, these are very expensive. The cheapest private investigator will likely charge you minimum $500.00 just to run a basic criminal records check on one person, which may or may not reveal everything about him or her. The one scenario where a private investigator however is necessary is where surveillance on a subject is necessary such as tracking down a person's comings & goings, personal associations on the street, etc.. This is best left to the professionals.

In recent years, there has been a growing market a number of inexpensive do-it-yourself "detective" search products on the market but only a few are really worth your time & money. Some "detective" products are nothing more than poor-quality knock-offs of their competitor's product, and a few in fact have been sued for copywrite infringement.
