Background checks don’t always reveal crimes
A routine statewide city employee background check in Colorado will not reveal a sex crime committed in Oklahoma or another state. If Aurora runs a statewide background check, it will only reveal sex crimes committed in Colorado.
Jermaine Vaden did 9 years in Oklahoma for sodomy on 2 children, but had a clean record in Colorado, so a statewide background check there would have showed up clean. A nationwide background check would be much better but those are reversed for more sensitive jobs involving direct contact with children, handling money or police or firefighting. While working a temporary job for the City of Aurora, Vaden was arrested for sexually molesting a boy he met on the job.
In light of Vaden’s arrest, Aurora implemented a new policy of nationwide background checks for all city employee applicants.
